1. Who does what
Pormenor does not find, buy, negotiate or transport vehicles. You choose the car, the seller and how to bring it to Portugal. We handle the legalisation and paperwork here — and we can help you check the documents before you pay.
2. Documents to check with the seller
- The registration document from the country of origin, the original.
- The purchase invoice, if you buy from a business, or a bill of sale, if you buy from a private seller.
- The Certificate of Conformity (COC). If there isn't one, it can be requested later from the manufacturer — find out how.
Check that the chassis number (VIN) on the documents is the same as the one on the car. It is a simple check that avoids serious problems.
3. Work out the full costs
The price of the car is only the start. On top of the purchase come the transport, which is on your side, and the cost of legalising it, which has three parts:
Tax
Mainly ISV, paid once when the vehicle is legalised. It is assessed by the Tax and Customs Authority (AT).
You can estimate it in the calculator.
Fees and expenses
Inspection, type approval, plates and registration. They vary with the vehicle and the process.
We list them in the quote.
Pormenor's fees
Our work preparing and following the process.
Quote after looking at your case.
To estimate the tax, use the ISV calculator. For the rest, ask us for a quote.
4. When the car arrives
Talk to us as soon as possible: some procedures have legal deadlines. Before driving in Portugal, check with us the status of the vehicle's registration and insurance.
The usual stages of legalisation — type approval, inspection, Customs, registration and recording — are summarised on the car legalisation page, with the official IMT source.
